This section describes the size and other characteristics of local industries. County-level data show the relative shares of employment by major industrial sector. State-level tables include data on gross domestic product by major sector and exports by selected sectors. Highlighted industries include agriculture, manufacturing, and the energy sector. An 1890 statistical atlas of the United States shows the relative sizes of four key industries based on
their combined contributions to the national product: agriculture (28 percent), manufactures (52 percent),
transportation (12 percent), and mining (8 percent).
