Income
This section examines the level and distribution of local income and the incidence of poverty. Tables include data on median family income, median household income and average income per person over time. Poverty tables describe the poverty status of individuals, including recent estimates of poverty by age group. For related data on social assistance programs, see the Health & Welfare chapter.

An 1880 statistical atlas of the United States tracks changes over time in the relative
wealth per capita by state. Iowa’s ranking improved from 30th in 1860
(shown, at $366 per capita), to 22nd in 1870, and to 16th in 1880.
Income was not included as a census measure until after the onset of the Great Depression.
